White dwarfs are small but high-density stars, with masses equalling those of bigger and much brighter stars. A white dwarf is the final stage of a star that is about to fade out, after shedding much of its materia as a red giant. Its weak light is because its core no longer contains any reactive processes. This image includes much of the shedded materia, which offers a beautiful visual spectacle.
