Here is our brand new collection of cemetary images, based on photographs that one of our team members brought back from her stay in Australia last year. The images portray some of the hundreds of amazing gravestones, tombs, crosses, catacombs, graves, monuments and memorials that can be found at the largest multicultural burial ground in the Southern Hemisphere: The Rookwood Necropolis.
Also known as Rookwood Cemetary, this huge graveyeard is located just outside of Sydney and is absolutely huge: Numbers vary, much because of the old age and the sheer size, but it's generally thought to be the home of about one million deceased souls. And in difference to some other old Victorian graveyards, the graves at Rookwood cemetery aren't wedged together. On the contrary, there are large, sprawling grass mounds and wide roads throughout the complex. But there are also plenty of shadows groves and other areas that offer a serene and haunting atmosphere.
Also, it closes "at dusk". I have my ideas on why.
We visited the graveyard on a particularly rainy day, and wandered the grounds back and forth under a murky, overcast sky. While this wasn't the ideal weather to visit a immense necropolis, it certainly added to the gothic mood as we were almost entirely alone. To boot, a flock of ravens followed us around and willingly posed on tombstones for some great pictures. We spent some times wondering why the ravens kept following us, when we realized that neither of us had ever actually seen ravens on a graveyard before (apart from in movies, of course).
All in all, it was a great experience, only surpassed by a visit some years ago to the Northgate Cemetary in London, UK. If you are in London, do yourself a favour and visit that churchyard - it's completely unlike anything I've ever seen before: Hundreds of ruined of near-ruined Victorian graves squeezed together so tight they're almost on top of each other. Withered gargoyles, crying cherubs, broken angels - it's all there.
Anyway, here are nine wallpapers for mobile phones that are sure to add some gloom to your phone! Enjoy!
