Instead of going for the nice-wizards-pets-friendly-harmless-dragon-type of images, we made a collection of more fitting background for a time and place when sorcerers, Black Guards and mad kings ruled the world. Who said that the medieval fantasy times where a nice place to begin with? No, no, no, the fantasy world is filled with dark places, far away from small little merry villages where everyone lives happy ever after. Imagine Mordor, with all its steel, coal and filthy dark environment. Or Shadar Logoth (from the Robert Jordan Wheel of Times books), an abandoned weird city with a wicked fog that tend to make people disappear. Now, that’s fantasy for you!

During the Dark Ages in Europe (with the knights, but without the dragons), the society was far from merry and happy. The Black Death ravished Europe and the practice of torture and death penalties was not uncommon. In fact, there is a torture museum in Prague, where the different torture devises (including an Iron Maiden) are displayed. And during the famous Viking era, human sacrifices to Odin were frequent and people where poor and starved. Depressing, huh? Well, that is the benefit of playing Role Playing Games; your character doesn’t have to die from an infection due to ill-fitting shoes. He or she has instead the opportunity to sacrifice him- or herself to save the rest of the heroes while fighting an enormous red dragon. And sometimes, you even win!

The photos in this category have been shot by one of our creative team members (who never leave home without his camera and tend to pester his friends by taking pictures of them all the time). However, he has captured some really cool pictures of gravestones and old Viking ritual places, which have been modified to increase the dark atmosphere.
